First of all, I'd like that overall, this is a fairly nice piece. The green of the ferns is very pleasing to the eye, great color, and you have some interesting contrasts going on with the trees thanks to the lighting - I also like the fact that you captured the way the light is progressively lessened as it penetrates the forest where darkness is most important. This decrescendo is rather exceptional, so good work on capturing that!

Still, although you have achieved some interesting effects via the contrast, it feels as if there's too much of a difference between the foreground and the background (where some parts almost seem over-exposed). I think it might have been helpful to focus on only one subject instead of trying to capture both. For instance, if you tried to focus on capturing the lushness of the ferns, you kept to a much shallower depth of field, then you could have a very interesting background for your ferns. My point is, the bottom half (or so) of the photo is very dark and doesn't have any lighting, whereas the upper half has almost too much of this.

I do like the fact that you took the trees from a side angle, rather than as a back light (which is so often seen in such shots). It is also laudable to you tried to include some of the beautiful green foliage. However, this photo lacks that special something to truly make it exceptional - in those back lit photos, the lighting creates a feeling of mystery. For this photo, what could have been interesting would have been to turn slightly a bit more to the left, and include more of the dark forest, to enhance that effect of the light progressively penetrating the shade of the forest, which could have created an altogether more pleasing and interesting effect.

On the whole, I think that the scene that you captured in this photo is really beautiful and interesting, of which your photo definitely shows a portion. I don't think that it has been shown off to its full potential, but that's just my two cents. I really want to highlight how incredible that green of the ferns is - I can't get over it!

I hope this was useful! :)

I think that this comment says all that needs to be said about this picture.
It's good, but I too get the impression of two good photos rather than one.
